This last weekend we made our way north to the Valley Community Church’s Missions Conference. This is a yearly event and we always enjoy taking time out to head up and not only participate, but to also visit with the friends that we have made there. This year we went and spoke with the elementary children for a few minutes, then when they split up to go to their rooms we spoke more with the 4th and 5th graders.  I know as a young kid I had an image of what Missionary is supposed to look like, and what they normally do. I thought all missionaries looked like Indiana Jones, but only with Short Pants and a bible—-and glasses. I also thought that all missionaries we always looking for the “lost tribe”. And yes, there are those that seem to live a very adventurous life as they paddle canoes and search for lost tribes, but not many have a tool belt and pack a Makita.

We always try to draw a big picture of just how huge the Missionary network is and what it takes to get the gospel to that “Lost Tribe”. There’s the guy from the warehouse, to the guy in the Hanger, to the Pilot flying the Nurse, Doctor, and Translator to the village. But you see all of these guys and gals got their first hunger for Mission’s after their Short Term Missions trip to Mexico, so you see, the Network is indeed huge. Our message to this young crowd was that they were the Future Builders for Jesus and that soon they might be heading down when they get into High school (we work with the HS kids from VCC).

In the class we eventually got around to explaining to the kids what Debbie and I do and to further draw a picture we brought in my tool belt, some tools and materials we use. We wanted some gift baggies to put some stuff into and we ended up getting some Lowe’s nail aprons. The kids decorated them and had this verse written on them

Then we had some of them came up and used my Makita drill to put in some screws into a small picture frame that we made with steel studs and sheet rock. We topped it off with some pictures of all the kids in their Nail Aprons.

We’d sure like to thank Valley Community of Pleasanton Califorina for such a great conference and all they do to communicate the importance of Missions

One Response to “VCC Missions Conference”

  1. Hi, Hollenbecks,
I really enjoyed your story about the Missions Conference. Did you share this with George Viebeck?
Hello from Pleasanton. Barry is off today and so this hello is from Lynette and Barry Craner. I will tell Rob and Geri Sullivan that I wrote you. They are staying with us before they go to Africa to be missionaries next month.
    In Christ,
    Lynette Craner
