It is the night before out big trip to Southern Baja and the both of us are feeling a bit excited as it’s been a long time since we last went on a Kayak trip. As noted on the last posting it kind of around our Anniversary, so this also makes it a special time and I’m sure the dark nights with no moon and the stars above will paint a very romantic night sky—that is if we can stay awake from paddling all day long. We will be heading south to Mulegé which sits on the east side of Baja California South, and it’s a very cute and tropical little town. From there we will head about 10 miles south to Bahia Concepcion where we will put in and paddle out. Although we have a rough idea of where we’ll be,,,,ya gotta remember that this is Baja, so nothing is never set in stone. Above you see the map we’ll kind of be using and all of this is in hopes that someday we’ll go for the big Paddle and kayak from Mulegé to Loreto which is about 85 miles. This week we’ll be paddling some where around 40-45 miles. Plan A will mean having to schedule a water drop, which means paying someone to run their boat out to the peninsula with a fresh supply. Plan B has us paddling back to the car and then head to where ever we camp.
Why Plan A Plan B you ask, well ya see in the gulf they have what’s called the Northerly winds which are kind of like the Santa Ana’s,,,,well for those that have lived in South Cal. ya know what I’m talking about. These winds can be so strong that they have stranded Kayaker’s on small islands or far away from their safe havens. It’s not so bad if you are prepared, but some people go out for a two hours paddle with very little water and find themselves stuck with 50 mph winds and very little water and no food. So even on a small day paddle you should pack enough water for at least 2 days, and some back up food as well.
As time goes we slowly gather our kayak gear and try to outfit ourselves for what ever might be out there. This year we’ve added a Cobra Marine VHF radio that will allow us to track weather conditions and if need be, and we hope not to,,,,but to have it in case of an emergency. Kayaking is great fun and it can be a peaceful and quite sport, but add some wind, currents, and swell and you have yourself an adrenaline rush.
If you want to check out something cool, download Google Earth run a search for Mulegé Baja California. So,,,there’s a few more things to do and some clothes to pack up so please pray for our travels on the HWY and some safe paddling as well, we’d sure appreciate it!
