A whizzz and a pop, the sizzle and smoke of the Grill, friends, family, or neighbors blocking off their streets to set up the bounce house and for the the bicycle parades—ahhh yes, it’s the 4th of July! I guess if anyone was to ask us what our most missed Holiday is I’d have to say hands down that it is the 4th of July. I can still remember our 4th of July that took place back in 1995 just before our move to Mexico and it was a very somber mood as I watched the fireworks show, watched the bright light streak across the sky as the Space Shuttle passed overhead (yes, the Space Shuttle), and ate grilled food with my buddy Greg Silkwood and his family. I realized that I was really going to miss this day and all it stood for and I had to really wonder what it was going to be like not being in the US of A.

I also remember on summer driving home from my Grandmothers funeral because Deb and I had to make very fast round trip to attend it and as we drove home it just happened to be the 4th of July. As we drove through Southern California we got to see firework shows going on and mostly what I thought of is how nice it would have been to just be sitting on a blanket that was on some freshly cut green grass (there is no grass in Ensenada) with a cold one and a hamburger dripping with cheese. Then I had to think what all these people were doing on the freeway,,,Everyone should be some where celebrating our countries independence!

Then the other night as I chatted with my good friend Cherie she mentioned that she was busy getting ready for the 4th of July and I could only think for a moment as what all those plans would be and how much fun it would be to again make plans for a big gathering on the 4th. Yea, we could still make some plans and do something here, but it’s just not the same—-There is no Old Glory waving from a high. To watch our Flag fly and wave is one of the first sights I for as I cross the boarder back in to the US and our flag is truly the most beautiful flag of all.

I don’t wish to get into a “political rant” so I won’t, but simply say to Greg, Cherie, and all of our friends and family—Happy 4th of July, and may your day be filled with with those you love as you celebrate our countries independence. But,,,do me this favor, take a moment to just stare at our Flag and really look at it for what it is, and what it stands for…then…Take a bite of a real messy, cheesy, freshly grilled hamburger for me.

God Bless America and Happy 4th of July
