Sergio, Bill, Carl, Ken Small, Reg, and Dennis

I’ve got about few thoughts in my brain in regards to our summer, but first I’d like to share our week with Bakerview Gospel Chapel who came all the way from Canada! This was our first opportunity to host a group from Canada and we had a very memorable time with them. The plan was to build the 12′x24′ addition to the structure that the group from Illinois did last summer. Antonia and her husband Tony worked hard to get everything ready to go and they were very excited to have some more room. Before the addition there were 6 people living in the 12′x20′ section and they did everything they could do to make it home, and oh yea,,,imagine what it was like with no electricity or water (which they still don’t have).
One thing we found out right away and that we loved was the fact that their leader Carl love ice cream which lead to nightly visits to the local ice cream hang out. One thing that made the ice cream taste so good every night was the fact that it was blazing hot during the day, and we think it was one of the hottest weeks we ever had. There was plenty to drink, but there was just no hiding from the intense sun, and we got to go home almost everyday with nice headaches.
The building process went smooth an with no real problems, or at least nothing that we could not take care of. We were all impressed of how diligent everyone was with the amount of heat we had to deal with, but every load of

concrete was wheeled in, Walls stood up straight, a roof finally gave a bit of shade, and the stucco went on smooth.
There was a nice mix of ages in there group that ranged from teenagers to grown adults and they also brought us their wonderful “Aye” and Reg who was originally from Ireland and needless to say he had that wonderful accent as well.
Besides all of the hard work they did on the house each afternoon they headed off to Casa Esperanza for VBS and on Wednesday and Thursday they did something completely different by having VBS at the beach! This was a request made by Casa Esperanza due to the heat and I guess the kids have no way of cooling off. It was very different and it has sparked an idea for next year and maybe we can design a VBS specifically for the the BEACH!

Our week with Antonia and her family ended with a huge pot of Tamales and beans and I think we all ate until we were ready to take our afternoon nap. Bakerview Gospel Chapel presented Antonia with a beautiful study bible that she was so very excited to have and she was awed by it’s size and that it was a STUDY BIBLE!
Our last day of work and our last day of work for the summer ended with a trip to the ice cream stand and i consumed my usual Agua de Horchata con dos bolas the Mint chip. There was a trip to La Bufadora where everyone had their chance to buy everything they don’t need, watch the blow hole, and then have some time at the beach (oh yea,,,Carl

One Response to “Oh Canada!”

  1. You can definitely see your enthusiasm in the paintings you write. The arena hopes for more passionate writers like you who aren’t afraid to mention how they believe. At all times follow your heart.
