Problem Child #4

Problem Child #4

Hummmm, we are kind of stuck on a little problem with our motor rebuild! The block needs to be bored out due to uneven ware on the cylinder walls, but we can’t find the pistons we would like to put in. Turns out that the main use for this motor is for large industrial trucks, or school buses, and only a few of these were manufactured for the daily driver. Right now we can only find pistons with a 7:1 compression ratio,,,which means—”no muey Bueno”. We’d kind of have a motor with no real power to write home about. So what’s a guy to do? Well,,,..How about swapping out the motor for the more popular 383? And, I just found a block on Craig’s list and it would open up all kinds of possibilities and options for the rebuild and upgrade. What we have here is you basic problem of Supply and Demand, the 383 was simply a more popular motor than the 361. But the only bummer is that the car will no longer have all original motor, which is always a very cool thing to have when you take the car to shows.
This always takes me back to the echos of my Dad telling me how he wanted everything original, but then I wonder what my Dad would do in this very same spot. I guess there are times when it just does not matter what name is on the registration (mine), I still feel like I’m taking care of my aunt’s car and I feel like I need my her permission to do what I think needs to be done. Well I guess that more than that,,,I need my Dad’s blessing!
Ya see, that why this is more than just some old hobby, or some whim of a project. This goes way beyond any of that, we are talking preserving part of our family history. Although,,,,,(hehe), in someway I feel the desire to in some way put my little part of it’s history into the car. In someway have it to where people can see and read of it’s history, but to also see some of my style in the car. I guess this could also mean some nice chrome wheels, a couple more speakers, and a pair of Fuzzy Dice.
How often do we feel like this when it comes to God’s will? There are times we come to a point in life where we need to make some big changes that can alter what we do in life, or speed us up as we take on new challenges. I think we look to the sky and wait for God to write it out for us, or we can go over the top and just do it because “It’s what we want to do!” Then we say,,,”see, because I made it happen, that’s what God wanted!” I think it all boils down to taking the steps in prayer and making those changes in life knowing you do it not for you, but because it’s what God has for you as you make those life decisions.
So I’m not sure what will happen over this weekend, but we need to make a decision fast. My Dad left this family jewel in my hands for many reasons, so I think he’d see my purpose in making a big change like this, but Dad always did joke with me about my lead foot, so maybe he’s got a little grin on his face knowing that with a 383 I’ll for sure be able to Smoke Them Tires!

  1. hey Dennis

Try out some of the aftermarket makers of pistons (Wiseco)or even better some of the speed shops. Google Summit Racing. The Internet is your best friend, there is something out there you just have to keep at it. I will let you know if other ideas come to mind.

  2. Oh yea,,,,been all over the web, Jegs, Summit, and even the machine shop has been searching all over as well—-there just aren’t any to be had. I’ve tried Federal Mogual, Speed Pro, Keith Black… There are pistons, but I’d like to have a bit more performance that a School Bus.
    Thanks for your Input Leon!

  3. Please try Superior Auto Eng. 2675 W. Woodland Dr. Anaheim CA 92801
714.503.1880 These guys are so good! I’ll bet that they can do something for you. They have built motors for some of my friends and do a great job. I just meet them a few weeks ago and I very impressed. They have deep connections in the motor business. Good Luck!

  4. A turbo? They love low compression pistons, although they totally change the “stock” appearance, yeah, never mind.
